What is Ganbanyoku?

It is something the Japanese learned from monkeys. Ganbanyoku is a hot stone spa popular in Japan, where people spend all day in one - especially during the cold winter months. No one knows its true origins, but the Japanese believe that it was introduced to the Japanese by people who observed Japanese macaques sleeping on flat hot rocks after soaking in hot springs in winter. These monkeys live long and healthy lives, so the early Japanese thought lying on hot rocks will be good for people too,

Ganbanyoku, in Japanese, means “bedrock bathing” without hot water. There are thousands of ganbanyoku in Japan where they are highly regarded for their therapeutic powers. Ganbanyoku rooms come in a huge variety of sizes, shapes and configurations but all share a common functional design. They all radiate far-infrared (FIR) and emit negative ions. A little bit similar to an infrared sauna, yet gentler and more penetrating. At the end of a typical Ganbanyoku session you will feel relaxed yet energized. Externally you will also notice a difference, your skin will glow, feeling smooth and rejuvenated. The summer heat will seem less oppressive and you will be infused with an overall sense of well being.

How does Ganbanyoku work?

The user, wearing special ganbanyoku clothes and using a towel sheet, lies directly on the rock bed, rotating occasionally to ensure total coverage front and back.  The far infrared heat penetrates deep beneath the skin surface, it stimulates water molecules and triggers a process called vibrational resonance.

Toxins are flushed out of fat cells, blood circulation improves and metabolism increases. As the body warms up, sweat glands perspire profusely cleansing the body. The process causes the sebaceous glands to secrete copious amounts of sebum that helps restore, condition and protect the skin. The profusion of negative ions amplifies the healing effect and helps reduce stress by inducing a heightened sense of relaxation. Negative ions are odourless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Think mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost energy.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Ganbanyoku?

Ganbanyoku uses naturally generated FIR that deeply penetrates to the cellular level, causing blood capillaries to dilate, stimulating circulation, increasing metabolism between blood and tissue – promoting cell regeneration.
Our stone beds get heated up above 40 degrees celsius by hot water pipes below 24 hours every day, causing them to release FIR and infuse the air with negative ions. Calming, soothing and relaxing, all you need to do is lie down and let nature do its work.

How To Use Ganbanyoku?

Ganbanyoku uses far infrared heat and negative ions to tweak your circulatory system and boost your metabolism. It is a simple and thoroughly relaxing process, however to maximise the therapeutic benefits of ganbanyoku there are some simple guidelines you should follow...

What do you need to bring for your Ganbanyoku session?

STEP 1)

Come as you are! We will provide everything you need, including:

·        personal locker to store your property

·        special Ganbanyoku wear, including slippers

·        large towel sheet to lie on

·        hand towel

·        alkaline ph level 8 water infused with negative ions to hydrate your body

·        after the session, we will serve you our in house fruit enzyme drinks that help with your digestive system and detoxification.

STEP 2)

Spread your towel sheet on the stone bed and lie down (face up or face down as you please).
Ensure to rotate periodically to ensure all parts of your body are exposed to the far infrared heat.
Repeat this process for as long as you feel comfortable. Usually we recommend you to lie flat on your stomach for 10 minutes, then sideways Buddha style for 10 minutes on each side, then 10 minutes on your back with your palms and feet touching the stone bed.

STEP 3)

After about 30 minutes (give or take) you will start to notice beads of sweat forming on your skin, soon your whole body will start to sweat profusely. At this stage it is good to take a break, go outside, cool down and drink fluids. Repeat the process as many times as you feel comfortable.Remember it is meant to be a relaxing process, do not push yourself and take your time.

STEP 4)

After your session allow yourself to dry naturally, It is recommended not to shower for at least two hours after and when you do try not to use soap. This will maximize the effect on your skin. The following day your skin should feel silky smooth and refreshed.

STEP 5)

Obviously we need to charge a fee for the use of the Ganbanyoku and for our massage services however the rest of the facility is there for you to enjoy at your leisure. After your massage or Ganbanyoku session, take a seat in the relaxation area, have some natural fruit enzyme drinks, zone out, read a book or have a chat. We really do enjoy your company and you may meet some new friends as well.
